In addition to the Institute for Chemistry, the new laboratory building on the Irchel campus is also home to the Institutes for Quantitative Biomedicine, Evolutionary Biology, and Environmental Sciences. The intention is to use synergies and deepen existing cooperation in the interface area.

In the new building, scientists will combine basic research with sustainable applications and, among other things, research safe batteries for renewable energies and medicines for healthy ageing. The work at the Institute for Quantitative Biomedicine combines basic medical research with translational research and medical information technology. The Institute for Evolutionary Biology and Environmental Sciences, on the other hand, investigates the sustainability in various ecosystems, among other things.

An innovative, flexible modular laboratory was developed and implemented for the building. Thanks to this, walls can be moved relatively easily and laboratory modules can be changed. This makes it possible to react to the new requirements of researchers in the future, and to accommodate the fast-growing numbers of students in these research areas.

Special laboratories are also located in the basement. Research areas such as laser or radiochemistry are housed here, as well as analytics such as X-ray crystallography, mass spectroscopy (MS) and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), which are extremely important for biological and chemical research. These are dependent on rooms that are particularly well shielded, have low vibration, and have constant environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity, which are now optimally provided by the new building. The building also houses a huge 1.2-gigahertz NMR spectrometer – of which only around half a dozen are in use worldwide – to research the structure and dynamics of large bio-molecules.
