About the project

The Qiagen development and research building is the first “green” laboratory in Europe, as the globally operating biotechnology company, with its headquarters in Hilden, has built one of the first production and laboratory buildings in Europe to have been certified in compliance with the LEED-Standard. According to the company, various measures were implemented here that made a contribution to the 32 percent reduction in energy consumption. This corresponds to an annual saving of around 170 tons of carbon dioxide. Despite the use of extremely powerful ventilation systems, approximately a third less energy is used in the building than in comparable buildings. The energy requirement is also met by green electricity. After a construction period of almost two years, a total of over 500 scientists are researching in the ultra-modern laboratory and office space to further expand the company’s global leadership position as a provider of sample and assay technologies.
